Rites of Passage

Just think of a wedding as evacuation exit… the best thing that can come to one’s mind is a photographer’s name.

Przemysław Pokrycki was born on July 28, 1974 in Hrubieszów, Poland.

He studied forestry, animation, culture and photography. In 1998 Pokrycki started working as a photojournalist for the daily newspaper “Super Express”. After two years he moved on to the photo agency “Reporter” and worked for numerous Polish magazines. He worked with the press until 2008. In 2009, together with Kamil A. Krajewski he started as a wedding photographer. This is how “Mamel Pictures” was born – today a leading wedding photography company.

Przemysław Pokrycki photographs families with different social backgrounds. His project Rites of Passage (started in 2005) grew into a collection of hundreds of family portraits and scenes taken during baptisms, first communions, weddings, funerals.

Unlike numerous wedding photographers, “Pshemek” takes realistic pictures and avoids vertiginous effects that are sought after and appropriated by hundreds of photographers in quest of seduction of their future clients. His photographs are static group portraits that could be seen as August Sander’s looks at today’s Polish people, dressed in their best. The photographer’s role does not overshadow his observer’s talent.
