On August 6 at 1PM at the square of Kaunas castle opens the exhibition “Castle Owners” by Tomáš Pospěch (Chech Republic) and at 2 PM on Chechnya square the “Spasibo” exhibition by Davide Monteleone (Italy/France) will be inaugurated in presence of KAUNAS PHOTO festival organisers and officials of Kaunas municipality. The exhibitions will be visible until the end of summer.
The growing interest in photography, KAUNAS PHOTO festival is growing too, meeting wider audiences.
In 2004, the first festival surprised Kaunas citizens and guests of the city by placing photographic exhibitions in non- typical places, such as a factory, places of commerce and transit. In 2014, the festival returns differently to public spaces and invites the inhabitants and guests of Kaunas to enjoy photography in public squares. The organisers aim to contribute to the renaissance of the pedestrian zones of Kaunas and make them more culturally charged.
KAUNAS PHOTO festival, held for the first time 10 years ago, this year will celebrate a number of other anniversaries. A group of European photographers, who turn 40 in 2014, will come to Kaunas to present their exhibitions under a common title “Generation 1974”.
Tomáš Pospěch was born in born in former Czechoslovakia in 1974. He was among the photographers who showed up in Kaunas for the first edition of Kaunas Photo festival, back then called “Kaunas Photo Days.” In 2004, he was exhibiting his work about an arrival of new TV factory that brought corporate culture to a provincial region of the Czech Republic.
This year, the 40-year-old photographer returns to Kaunas with another series, „Castle owners“. This project deals with a typically Czech phenomenon: the making of garden models of real as well as imaginary castles and mansions. These small monuments decorate gardens and green areas of villages, squares or railway stations. The extensive photographic collection by Tomáš Pospěch pays a tribute to the relation between these miniature buildings and their owners / creators. Photographer’s simplicity and proximity to models, a tinge of humour, a slightly pathetic patriotic tune turn these images into a playful introduction to Czech castles and mansions.
Davide Monteleone, born in 1974 m. in Italy, where he grew up, but he spent a number of years away from his native country. KAUNAS PHOTO festival welcomes his acclaimed photographic series „Spasibo“. Since 2001, Davide has been well familiar with Caucasus region. “Spasibo” is a documentary reaeach. Its images depicting scenes of optimism, such as scenes of sports, religious rites, wedding ceremonies, street scenes of the post-war Chechnya, cannot escape the tension and uncertainty of the compromise of this rebellion nation.
Most of the exhibitions of KAUNAS PHOTO festival will be on until October 12.
KAUNAS PHOTO festival, organised from 2004 by VšĮ “Šviesos raštas” and the Kaunas Branch of the Lithuanian Photographers Association, is member of international organisations, such as “Festival of Light” or European Photo Festival Union.
